November 7th will always be in my mind as the day my father passed from this life. Such a wonderful man! I love my dad. He has been an inspiration to me and a comfort. Today he died after having a heart attack while playing billiards at the university. At first the doctors were optomistic, but later realized his heart was damaged beyond repair. If he had made it through a surgery, he wouldn't have been the same mentally since his brain had been deprived of oxygen too long.
Mom's decisions were instantaneous with regards to surgery. She talked of my dad's beautiful mind and how she wouldn't take that away from him. She would rather he pass through the veil and do the Lord's work on the other side. It's hard for us, but we know that he was needed on the other side. Somewhere today I was able to gather the strength needed to be there for my mom. Tonight, my daughter has the strength to be there for me. It must be a generational thing.
Dad became an organ and tissue donor and will be cremated sometime this week. We'll have a memorial service for him on Friday most likely. There will probably be hundreds of students and teachers that come. We're talking about some sort of open house format that will be a "Celebration of Life." Joe's aunt did something similar when her husband passed away about four years ago. It was a tasteful and not depressing. The last thing we need that day is to be depressed. As my mom keeps saying, we need to be happy for Dad going on to his "next great adventure" even while we're sad for ourselves. How comforting it is to know that we will be able to see him again one day. Unfortunately for us, it won't be in the blink of an eye like it will be for him.
I'm glad I was here to say my "see you laters" and support my mom. Doing that from Memphis would have been so much harder. I guess there was a greater purpose in my being here with my kids than I initially thought. Maybe it wasn't just for my daughter, but for my sons and my father so they would get to know each other before this day came. I'm grateful they had the opportunity, I just wish it could have been a bit longer.

Travel and Tornadoes
What a combination! Here we are traveling to Nauvoo and attending the pageant and we end up getting calls from Memphis to let us know a tornado hit in our neighborhood. Supposedly we have trees down in our yard, but no damage to the house. We found out just before Joe and I went to do a session at the Nauvoo temple.
What an experience! The temple is gorgeous! What's even cooler is that I met Grandpa's brother, Don, and his wife, Sonya, in the temple. I've never met them before. We met them yesterday when we took Bear to do baptisms. Tonight we took all the kids over to meet them. It was nice to talk to them. What neat people.
The pageant is wonderful. Everybody should go see it. I can see Bug being in it eventually. With her ability to play various instruments, she could do very well.
Nauvoo is a very nice community. I like seeing the old building and learning about how the pioneers lived. The only issue we have is keeping the two-year-old occupied so he doesn't try to throw a tantrum during the various tours. I wish we could do an extra day, but Joe has to get back for military duty and now we have to find out about what's going on at home.
I'm glad that we've heard that our house wasn't damaged since we will likely be putting it on the market soon. Joe had his second interview with Idaho National Laboratory about three weeks ago now. We were told they'd decide "soon," but their version of soon doesn't match ours. We feel like it's going to happen, but all we can do is hurry up and wait. Oh well. Patience is a virtue that I'm trying to gain at this point. I'll just keep packing so that I can move fast when they finally decide the smart thing to do would be to hire Joe. The move feels right, it's just the timing that's the question.

Travels
Wow! What a month for traveling! I went to Costa Rica on June 9th for a week with Bear. We met my parents there and visited John and his family. It was nice to get away from the daily grind and spend time in a beautiful country. Bear and I went to the beach, saw my dad fix John's van that had a steering rod (I think that's what it was) break, did a zip line through the top of the jungle, saw monkeys at a different beach, and just rested some days. Bear did get a 24 hour bug while we were there that spread to John's girls, but was none the worse for wear on his way home. I wouldn't want to live there, even though it's gorgeous, since I really like my creature comforts, but it was a pleasant visit.
Actually, John and Sharon said they miss some things about the States as well. Sharon said she wished they could be on the internet in the car. Boy was she shocked when I mentioned that Joe uses an air card to use cell service for internet. He's done it for years. They had no idea that was even available.
Last week Bug headed off to girls camp with the church. She had lots of fun, and even enjoyed the overnight hike. She got back on the 3rd and turned around today to head to Alaska to visit Helen. Boy - has that flight already been an adventure. We got stuck in horrible Memphis traffic since we had to get to the airport during rush hour, but we still had about 50 minutes before her flight. Got in the "special" line for an unaccompanied minor, but were behind lots of other "special" people so I thought they'd already be boarding when we got to the gate. NOT! Her plane didn't start boarding until about five minutes before they were to leave. It didn't leave until an hour after it was scheduled to. She just made her connection in Seattle by the skin of her teeth, but is on the plane heading to Anchorage. Unfortunately for her, she didn't have time to eat or use the facilities before getting on the plane, so the first part of the flight is going to be pretty miserable. But, she made it and will have three weeks (including one of EFY) in Alaska.
The next three days it will be just me, Dude, Buddy and Seuss since Bear is away at scout camp this week, and Joe flies out to Idaho tonight for a six hour job interview process tomorrow. I'm SO excited for him. He's interviewing with INL in Idaho Falls (kind of) and so we could be moving soon. I found out that the schools start August 24th, so, if this happens, we hope to be there by then.
It's been lots of excitement this past month and we've even started packing. Even if the job in Idaho falls through, we plan on selling this house and finding something that will work better for us. Hopefully that's in Idaho. I'd feel like I was going home. So far it feels right and Joe agrees with me. I kept telling him I wasn't sure if it felt right because I wanted it so bad, or if I wanted it so bad because it feels like the right thing to do. We're putting it in the Lord's hands at this point and hoping that what He wants is what we want too. I'll keep you updated on this - if I ever remember to blog. I'm better at this than a journal though...

Summer
Whew! Summer is definiitely here in the south! It's been over 90 the past two days with thunder storms popping up and everything. At least no storms came today and the kids could play outside.
The bad - and good - part of summer is that the kids are home. They get to play and drive me nuts. I've gotten a free trial membership to a local museum, but couldn't print out the card. That's the way it goes sometimes.
Bug won't be here for a good part of the summer. Tomorrow she goes on "Trek" where they recreate the pioneers travels west. She's got the long skirts and everything. Everything gets packed in a 5-gallon bucket so that their stuff is easier to transport with hand carts. She'll get back Saturday and then hang out for a few weeks. Girl's camp is the last week of June. She gets back July 3rd and leaves for Alaska July 7th. She'll be in Alaska three weeks and is attending EFY in Anchorage. She's so excited.
Bear and I head to the jungles of Costa Rica next Tuesday. My mom and dad stopped by the other day and gave me a plan "just in case" neither John or they were there to meet us. My Spanish is awfully rusty, so I hope there are no uprisings in Venezuela or Columbia (where Mom and Dad are coming from) or earthquakes or landslides between John's home and San Jose. Maybe it will improve during the week I'm down there. Then again, maybe not. John, Sharon, and my parents all speak English.
Seuss had speech today. He's doing so much better. He can say about 20 words now. It's nice to finally hear him say something. The words aren't perfect, but you can catch the jist of what he's trying to say. I think "key" is his favorite word.
Our dog is doing better. Sadie was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor about four weeks ago. It was removed and she went to have her stitches out today. It was classified as a level 2 (out of 4) but she seems to be doing well. We can't afford to do the chemotherapy and stuff that a vet oncologist may recommend, so we're just going to hope that they got it all and it doesn't come back. Apparently this is something that responds well to cortizone, so we may just have her get vetalog shots every couple of months for a while.
I hope vet bills aren't as high everywhere. Joe and I are looking to move. We finally feel that our calling here in Memphis is coming to an end. We'd love to move to Idaho Falls and build on my parents' land. I can't tell you how nice it would be to be out of this city. Second most dangerous city in the country and I'm living in it. I'd much rather be in a place where I knew my kids could play outside with less fear of being caught in a drive-by shooting. Where they could go to a public pool without having to drive all over town and then be watched over by life guards that turn out to be ex-cons - some even for sexual offenses.
Joe and I had been called to this area for a purpose. We know that. Our friend Frances and her daughter Lacey were baptized eight years ago next month. They are doing well and Frances is working on getting to the temple. She's been bi-polar, but since her baptism has been able to monitor it with mineral supplements rather than more potent medication. We'd thought we were done here a few years ago and wanted to move, but were told "no." Then we brought out Joe's niece to be our nanny and she ended up meeting her husband. They've been married two years now and are moving to Colorado at the end of this month. I guess we may be able to move too.
If any of you know of good IT possitions in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, or even Arizona, let us know. We'd prefer Idaho, but at this point, Joe just wants to be closer to family. I'm just glad that we both feel it's time to move on. I've wanted to move - even within this area - for awhile now. Never did want Bug to attend the high school we ended up pulling her out of. I certainly don't want my boys going there. Plus, this is the longest I've lived anywhere. I don't know what to do if I'm not moving every couple of years. :-) Going somewhere that I feel that I can get a horse wouldn't hurt either...

Clean Bedrooms!
I can't believe it! My kids can actually hear and listen with their ears! Too bad they don't listen to me when I tell them to clean their rooms. All it took was Bug knowing her Aunt Be was going to be here for her to finally clean her "black hole." The sty that my boys live in finished getting clean today since both aunts were there encouraging them to sort their toys and clothes. Plus, with all the help, the laundry was finally caught up...with the possible exception of Bug's since she does her own.
I didn't realize how many clothes my kids had! I just knew that laundry is a never ending task. So, as we were getting ready to put things away, I went through the stacks of clothes (they actually let me do something since I didn't have to get out of the butt numbing chair) and put in them in piles for each boy. As I did, I pulled out all the clothes that they had out grown, stained, or had holes and either put them aside to box for hand-me-downs or to go to Goodwill. Then, Dude still had more than would fit in his drawers, so he went through and pulled out some clothes he didn't like any more. Turns out many of those that had already been in his dresser were too small. Thus, even more were boxed or ready to donate. We have quite the donation pile now. Tomorrow I may have them go through old VCR tapes and pull out any that we have on DVD. I'll send the tapes with my SILs to Joe's niece that has leukemia. That way she will have something different to watch after she's undergone her chemotherapy treatments. Luckily she's in maintenance right now so she doesn't have to go as often any more.
Not only did my SILs help get my house cleaned up, but they sent me to a spa where Joe's niece, Cybil, works. They conned Joe into pretending I had a doctor's appointment related to the spinal block I'll get tomorrow, and treated me to a pedicure. I've never had one before, but it was actually quite relaxing. Very different for me to have painted toenails... Maybe if I ever have extra money I'll indulge in that type of extravagance again.
I was talking to my SIL, Christine, who was glad to have the excuse to come out and be able to visit with her daughter, Cybil. She said she was sorry her excuse had to be that I killed my back, but I told her I was happy to oblige. Truthfully, I'm glad that I've been able to visit with them. Joe's been pretty overwhelmed with everything. Things are going nuts at work, the kids are home for spring break, and now I'm pretty much down. I try to get up, but get told to sit down every time I try to do anything. Today was pretty good though. I didn't need anything for pain until late afternoon.
Joe was going to go to a hockey game with the kids tonight, but he couldn't sleep last night because of everything going on. Buddy was sleeping downstairs where I've been (sleeping in the recliner has been easier) but since I slept upstairs last night, Joe tried to sleep in the recliner. Then he found out why I'd come upstairs...Buddy snores! So, Joe is exhausted. Be didn't want him driving, so bribed the kids with a promise of a movie tomorrow if they'd tell him they didn't want to go to the game. Buddy is running a fever, so they allowed the arm twisting since Joe then promised them he'd take them to the final game of the season on Saturday. Everyone is happy and tired.

Taxed Back
Tax season is here. I should be really busy getting tax returns out, working part-time selling shoes, and chasing five kids. What am I doing? Sitting doing tax returns because I can't move very far very fast. About six weeks ago, right before the Pinewood Derby, I slipped down the last three stairs in my house. About 10 days later I went to the doctor since my back was still sore and wanted to be sure I hadn't cracked anything. I hadn't and was given some prescriptions for pain and a muscle relaxant. I felt pretty good, until last Tuesday when I had a hard time getting out of bed.
I'd woken to the phone ringing and realized I couldn't move without pain shooting up my back. I hollered for Bear, but he was still asleep and didn't hear me calling him. Fortunately, Bug had just walked in from seminary and found me in tears next to the bed. I told her to call her dad, who (having fallen asleep in his office) asked grumpily "What do you want me to ?!" I told her to tell him to come give me a blessing and sorry for waking him up. That night I had Joe take me to a minor medical center for yet another x-ray which showed nothing wrong and was refered to an orthopaedic office.
The orthopaedic doctor had me sitting down and lifted my lower leg to be straight and I nearly went through the roof. The pain was horrible! In fact, probably worse than childbirth in many ways. It was like an electric shock in my back. He sent me for an MRI and Friday confirmed what he suspected, I have a ruptured disc.
For many I guess this would mean surgery, but my doctor is going to try a spinal block (I get it Wednesday) and then we'll wait a week to see if my back starts healing on its own. If not, then I'll go in for surgery. Definitely not the right time of year for this to happen.
Joe's sister and his sister-in-law flew into Memphis on Saturday and will be helping out until they return to their homes on Thursday. He hadn't asked for help, but truthfully he really wanted to. It's actually been good that they've been here. They motivated my kids, and my kitchen hasn't been this clean in ages. Joe's SIL (Christine) was glad to come since her daughter is out here, so this gave her a good excuse to come visit. His sister (Be) probably just needed to get away. Plus, she loves our kids. Samuel adores her.
I've been sitting around with my laptop and have gotten lots of taxes done. Plus I'm catching up on all my tax magazines and the CPE tests that I need to take to keep my license. The frustrating thing for me has been feeling like I should be getting up and helping people that are cleaning my house, but everytime I get up, somebody tells me to sit down. Frankly, my butt is going numb from sitting on it so much!
Oh, well. I think this has been a lesson for my family in learning to accept help, that we aren't above needing it. I had to find help with the organ and choir at church, rides for kids to youth activities, etc. It seems that people have been willing to help. My visiting teachers and the mom of one of my cub scouts brought dinners in. I have a great ward which is a good thing since most of our family is nearly 2,000 miles away. The benefit of being in a church like ours is that people get to know eachother. We have a great system for spreading word that people need help which is even faster now that everybody has email. It has been very helpful to have such good friends in my church. It's even been good having company that will talk to me and not pass judgement on my house. Joe's taken some time off that he needed desperately. I may be pretty sore at the moment, but keep in mind that all things happen for a purpose. I'm beginning to see the purpose, but I still hope to be back on my feet soon.

Teeth
Buddy lost his first tooth tonight! What an end to the day. He's so excited that he wants to go to the dentist and ask when the big tooth will come in and when he'll lose the next tooth. Then he asked if I was the tooth fairy. Since Santa and the Easter Bunny aren't a mystery, neither is the tooth fairy. He's still excited though. He can't wait to tell his friends tomorrow.
